Early Registration is now open for the Fall 2017 Semester!

Here are the details:
Our meeting time and location will remain the same-- Tuesday afternoons @ Hopewell Baptist Church. The optional PE Games period will begin at 1:15 pm and regular class sessions will start at 2:00 and end by 3:35 pm.

In order to be eligible for discounted fees for lead/co-lead teachers, your class subject must be pre-approved by Rachael or Heather (please email or call us to discuss).  Families new to SHHC this year are eligible to participate as "assistants only" during their first year-- or they are certainly welcome to teach/co-lead teach a class!!!

All SHHC families must complete a Registration Form, Participation Agreement, Statement of Faith and Liability Waiver (links in the sidebar). Please email us if you need the address to send your documents and/or registration fees. Payment may be made by cash, check or PayPal (links in the sidebar).  Please know if you choose to pay via PayPal, you will see a small addition to your total which is to cover the cost of PayPal's fees.

Our list of class offerings will be published around July 1st.  New families wishing to take advantage of early registration discounts, please be aware that our classes will be available for children from preschool through middle/high school as well as childcare for infants. Elementary age and higher classes will be available in age-appropriate ranges (typically K-2nd, 3rd-5th and 6th and up). Our parent-led classes are typically enrichment type-- you can see the actual classes we've offered in the past at the link on the sidebar.  If you have questions about potential classes for this fall before July 1st, please email us and we'll be happy to let you know which classes we currently have teachers for.

SHHC is pleased to announce our class offerings for the Winter/Spring 2017 semester.

Our meeting time and location will remain the same-- Tuesday afternoons @ Hopewell Baptist Church. The optional PE Games period will begin at 1:15 pm and regular class sessions will start at 2:00 and end by 3:35 pm.

All new SHHC families must complete a Registration Form, Participation Agreement and sign a Statement of Faith (links in the sidebar) as well as pay a Family Membership Fee. Family Membership fees cover enrollment for all children in your family into one class per class period (two) for the entire 12 week semester.

Payment may be made by cash, check or PayPal (links in the sidebar).  Documents may be downloaded, scanned and submitted via email. If you prefer to send them and/or registration fees via mail, please email us for our mailing address. If you choose to pay via PayPal, you will see a small addition to your total which is to cover the cost of PayPal's fees.

Winter/Spring 2017 Class Descriptions

1st period

K-2^nd grade

Fun With Literature: We will have hands-on fun while exploring children's literature.  We will read approximately one book per week and complete history, science, math, or art activities that correlate with our book.

Sea Creatures: This will be a hands-on unit study about all the fun animals that are found in oceans around the world.

3^rd-5^th grade

Georgia State Study: Learn about our state and make a state notebook covering topics such as state symbols, geographic regions, government, tourism, famous people/inventions, industry and more!

Bigger Builders: a STEM-focused class that challenges students to think about how to build all sorts of structures. Hands-on activities will be a major part of this class.

6^th- 12^th grade

Minecraft:  We will be combining Minecraft with Art, Science, Math and Social studies activities and projects.  Come join us for all the fun! A personal electronic device (ipad/tablet/laptop/kindle) with Minecraft loaded on it will be required for each student.

World War II:  This class will use movie clips, possibly a movie, projects, and activities to investigate people, music, and events of World War II.  While we have no plans to show piles of bodies from concentration camps, we will see and discuss film footage from news reels, movies, and still pictures.  We would like to invite some WWII veterans to visit this class. Supply fee: $10 per child.

Comic Book Heroes:  Calling all superhero fans!  Who is your favorite superhero?  Do you know his or her history?  Would you like to develop your own comic book hero?  Here's the class for you.  We will dive into the background of comic book heroes.  We will examine basic storylines and character development using comic book format.  Also, we will practice grading actual comics to determine value for collecting.  Our final project will be developing group comic books with new heroes from your own imaginations.  Note:  You do not have to be an "artist" for this class but everyone will need to participate in the story-building process within a small group.

Art Exploration:  This class will cover a variety of arts and crafts mediums.  Mrs. Terri (from Scripture Art Journaling) will join us for several weeks teaching a variety of art techniques (which may include watercolor and painting).  Mrs. Becky will introduce us to fiber art and possibly embroidery.   This will be a fun class if you enjoy art and crafting! Supply fee: will likely be required. 

2nd period

K-2^nd grade

Weather Science: Have you ever wondered what clouds were made of? How to make a rainbow? Or just want to know more about severe weather and so much more??? We will learn all about this and more in this weather class by reading books, doing experiments and making fun weather related crafts!

Young Artists: In this introduction to art, we will explore the 7 elements of art (line, shape, color, value, texture, form and space) with hands-on activities and visual examples. Other topics may include famous artists and their work, different art techniques, some art history and how to properly critique artwork in a kind, meaningful way.

3^rd-5^th grade

“See the Light” Art Class: Each lesson provides kids with progressive, hands-on tools to learn everything from basic art skills before tackling tougher challenges and more advanced topics and techniques.  This class will use the DVD series “See the Light” where master artist, Pat Knepley, teaches step-by-step drawing lessons combined with Scripture.  Supply fee: $10 per child for an art kit that the student will use in class and will take home at the end of the semester.

Explosive Science: From glow sticks (chemiluminessence) to growing soap, come spend time with us figuring out the science behind lava lamps, Coke and Mentos (data logging), Archimedes scale (dispersion), dry ice bubbles (sublimation) and so much more. 

3^rd-6^th grade

Lego Mindstorms Part 2: This class is a continuation of the first semester class that focused on learning how to program robots using the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Robotics System. Students will use their previously acquired programming skills to complete fun challenges with the robots.  Pre-requisite: Intro to Mindstorms Class is required.

6^th- 12^th grade

Mini Weapons: We will build "a secret agent arsenal" based on the book, Mini Weapons of Mass Destruction 2, by John Austin. Possible projects include a Binder Beretta 92, a Cotton Swab 38 Special, plus many more. Students must be capable of safely using craft/razor knives to cut plastic pieces (empty glue sticks, marker casings, milk caps). 

Personal Finance Class (Part 2) – This class is a continuation from the first semester but is open to new students and will focus on different topics than the first semester. Topics that will be discussed second semester include bargain shopping, financing your education after high school, being an educated buyer, money and relationships, giving and much more.   The DVDs for the class are from Dave Ramsey’s Foundations in Personal Finance. These DVD’s are highly entertaining and focus on the basics of how to win with money. The class also involves fun life application activities. 

Yearbook: The goal of this class is to produce a yearbook for our Co-op. The students will use and develop skills in planning, photography, journalism, and teamwork in order to accomplish the basic task of yearbook production. There will be some outside class time required for students on the yearbook staff. All students enrolling in this class must commit to performing tasks as assigned. Additionally access to a computer is required in order to complete layout assignments. 

Sweet Shop: We will delve into the history of candy, why it has become such a cultural staple and make a variety of some to try and take home.  Supply Fee:  $5 per student.

First Period

K-2^nd

Creeping Crawling Creatures

Find out what's "bugging" you! Learn about insects, spiders, and other creatures we find crawling around outside. Each week we will learn about a different creature including their special features, their habits and their habitats. Hands-on learning will include stories, games, crafts and more. 

Music and Movement

This will be a class filled with lots of action as we learn about music from around the world with instruments, movement to music and basic music theory.

 

 

3^rd-5^th

 Amphibians and Reptiles

Explore the amazing world of reptiles and amphibians!  We will dig deep into the reptile orders of Squamata: lizards and snakes, Chelonia: turtles and tortoises, Crocodilia: alligators and crocodiles, and several members of amphibians including frogs, toads and more.  We will learn new facts and encounter live animals in our class!  A supply fee will be added to this class to cover an "in-class field trip" with a reptile specialist for a hands-on learning experience.

 Elementary Board Games

Each week this class will feature a different board game.  Some will be educationally based, some will just be fun!  Students will learn the basics of how to play each game and then put it into practice by participating afterwards.  Some games will be:  Funglish, Malestrom, Inventors, Apples to Apples, Settlers Of Catan, Mexican train dominos, Jenga and much more.

 6^th and up

 World Religions and Christian Apologetics

This class will focus on learning how to share the Gospel and how to defend the Christian faith. We will study the Bible and use the truth of the scripture to combat false religions and cults such as Islam, Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormonism.

 Lego Mindstorms

This class is an introduction to programming robots using the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Robotics System. Working in small groups, students will use a computer to program their robot to move, react, and make sounds in order to solve challenges.  As time allows, topics will include motor control, sensors, timing, program loops, logic gates, decision-making, timing sequences, and binary number systems as well as problem solving strategies. Class fee will be required and several laptops will be needed if you have one you can bring.

 8^th and up

 C is for Cooking

This will be an advanced cooking class as we explore creating items that all begin with the letter “C”—items may include things like couscous, cream puffs and crème brulee. In order to cover the cost of groceries, a class fee and possibly supply list will be required. Class will also be limited in size due to kitchen space.

US Presidents

Hail to the chief! Here's your chance to learn all about the presidents' achievements, their nicknames, hobbies, even what kind of goods they ate. After you learn so much about presidents, maybe you will want to run for office someday, too.
 

Oceans and Continents

"Travel" the world with fun books, crafts, and foods that represent the continents and oceans of our world. We will take a journey that your students won't soon forget!  Supply fee: $5 per student (also, please list food allergies and/or restrictions).

 3rd- 5th

Ancient Egypt Unit Study

Mummies and cats and pharaohs, Oh my! We’ll be learning all things about ancient Egypt!!

"The Indian in the Cupboard" Book Club

Come and join our book club featuring the first book of “The Indian in the Cupboard” trilogy. Bring your imagination as we go on this "little" adventure that turns out to be quite a huge one. We will discover more about the Iroquois Indians through some mini projects such as building a mini long house, developing a village, and going on a mini hunt. Let's use our big imaginations to discover what it would be like if we were only 3 inches tall. So if you like tales of adventure, friendship, and even time travel, our book club is for you. Parent note: Easy read for 4th, 5th graders- probably 3rd/4th grade actual reading level. Students will be required to read 1-2 chapters a week at home. Class Supply Fee: $2 fee for book unless you already have a copy.

 

4^th and up

DIY Maintenance and Repair

An exciting hands on course designed for boys that will learn basic care, maintenance, repair and small projects that can be done around the home and or a car. While learning the basics we will also be incorporating Biblical character values into our teaching to help transition young boys into God honoring young men who will walk worthy of the name of Christ.

 6^th and up

 Yearbook

The goal of this class is to produce a yearbook for our Co-op. The students will use and develop skills in planning, photography, journalism, and teamwork in order to accomplish the basic task of yearbook production. Shakespeare Literature Study

Do you think Shakespeare is boring or hard?  Well, boy are you wrong!!!  Join us as we dive into "Romeo and Juliet" and "Macbeth".  We will have lots of fun activities to bring the plays to life.  Students will need a copy of "Romeo and Juliet" and "Macbeth" that they can bring to class.

 7^th and up

Constitutional Candidates

With the election year upon us, we will be researching the candidates who wish to represent us at every level of government, from Washington DC all the way down to our local city offices. We will discover the responsibilities of each office and evaluate how they align with the Constitution. There will be research assignments to be completed outside of class. These should require no more than 1hr per week. Each family will need to purchase the book, Sovereign Duty, either in paperback ($18) or ebook ($10).

1^st period

K-2^nd

Holidays: This class will be a unit study on US holidays with a focus on their history and traditions.  It will include many hands on activities.

Loving Literature: This will be an activity based literature class.  We will read classic children’s stories and have activities related to the stories which may include things like lapbooks, games, crafts, etc.

 3^rd-5^th

Artistic-al, Scientific-al Adventures: Art meets Science?  Who would have known? As students are learning about famous artists and their works, they will also be introduced to basic science concepts each week. They will create their own masterpieces and watch science happen right before their eyes!  The projects will be sent home each week, with an artist bio and an explanation of the science concept. Supply fee: $5 per student.

Travel Around the World: Come take a journey around the world!  We will explore the culture and traditions of a variety of countries as well as engage in fun hands-on activities like cooking traditional foods from each country we visit.  Supply fee: $5 per student.

 6^th and up

Introduction to Cake Decorating: We will learn the basics of beginning cake decorating from making icing and frosting a cake to learning how to use basic decorating tools.  Students will have a chance to practice new skills each week which will include such things as stars, borders, writing, flowers and leaves.  We will also explore cupcake & cookie decorating.  Class size will be limited to 10 students and priority will be given by age and to students who have not previously taken this class.   Supply fee: $20 per student (will include tools that the students get to keep at the end of class).

Movies as Literature: We will watch 2 or 3 classic movies during class (TBD at present—under consideration are “Shane”, “The Quiet Man” and “The Music Man”) to introduce and study the elements of literary analysis. This class will not only give students the tools to appreciate good books more fully, but will equip them with the ability to begin to discern underlying messages in movies rather than simply absorb them.

 7^th & up

Roots of Liberty : This class is not just another lecture on the Constitution. Each week we will view and discuss a portion of a seminar in which KrisAnne Hall of Liberty First presents the 700+ year history that gave us our founding documents – proving that our founding documents were not created on a whim and that they are reliable and relevant. In addition to the history of the Bill of Rights, KrisAnne presents each of the first ten amendments in their context - in the words and history of our founders. As you enter adulthood, it is extremely important to know not only what your rights are, but why you have them. (No supply fee. A list of optional activities and reading will be provided for those who wish to supplement this class either for high school credit or for fun.  Also, this class will be open to 6^th graders who are interested in this topic and advanced discussions.)

Missionary Stories: This class will focus on real-life stories of missionaries, including God's protection, provision and "everyday" miracles. We'll also study the culture, food, language and geography of the countries where the missionaries serve.

K-3^rd

Superpowers for Success: Want to sharpen some of your Superpower Skills?  This class will help you improve your superpower skills of making a great first impression (refine your handshake, make introductions, and dressing the part) and communicating effectively (interrupting politely, being a good friend, and writing thank you notes).  Naturally you have to keep up your Super Strength, so we'll learn about setting the table, fun ways to fold napkins, and what to do when (Ewwww!) you're served a food that is just plain yucky!  We will end the semester with a Super Party where we can practice our Super Skills!

 

3^rd-5^th

Bird Nerds: We're going to learn to identify different birds, construct bird feeders and bird houses.  We'll learn about what owls eat by dissecting owl pellets.  We will perform many more "egg"speriments along the way.

4^th and up

Team Sports: This intramural, low-key, class will learn the fundamentals of several team sports: Flag Football, Slow-pitch Softball and Volleyball.  The semester will be broken up into three, four week periods, concentrating on one sport at a time.  Early weeks will be in the classroom exploring each sport’s history, position names and responsibilities, equipment requirements, and strategies of the game.  The class will also work on teamwork and other core values (wisdom, initiative, compassion, self-control, etc.).  The class will then move outside, broken into two teams to play the sports.

 

6^th and up

Scripture Art Journaling: Based on the ebook, A Year of Art Journaling, this class is a beginner course in artful discovery for anyone interested in the creative world of art journaling, with a focus on creating a weekly page based on a scripture.  For the student who wants a way to tap into their creative reserves in an art form that doesn’t measure results, but instead encourages discovery and exploration.  Supply fee and/or supply list will be required.

(*** This class is still PENDING final approval***) Ecopolis: This class is an economics/government resource where each person in the class plays a part in a simulated town.  Students get a chance to have jobs, make speeches, elect officials, pay taxes, compete in business and more.

Registration for the Fall 2015 semester of South Hall Homeschool Co-Op is open!

Here are the details:

Our meeting time and location will remain the same-- Tuesday afternoons @ Hopewell Baptist Church. The optional PE Games period will begin at 1:15 pm and regular class sessions will start at 2:00 and end by 3:35 pm.

In order to be eligible for discounted fees for lead/co-lead teachers, your class subject must be pre-approved by Wendy or Rachael (please email or call us to discuss).  Families new to SHHC this year are eligible to participate as "assistants only" during their first year-- or they are certainly welcome to teach/co-lead teach a class!!!

All new SHHC families must complete a Registration Form, Participation Agreement and sign a Statement of Faith (links in the sidebar). Please email us if you need the address to send your documents and/or registration fees. Payment may be made by cash, check or PayPal (links in the sidebar).  Please know if you choose to pay via PayPal, you will see a small addition to your total which is to cover the cost of PayPal's fees.

Our list of class offerings will be published around July 1st.  New families wishing to take advantage of early registration discounts, please be aware that our classes will be available for children from preschool through middle/high school as well as childcare for infants. Elementary age and higher classes will be available in age-appropriate ranges (typically K-2nd, 3rd-5th and 6th and up). Our parent-led classes are typically enrichment type-- you can see the actual classes we've offered in the past at the link on the sidebar.  If you have questions about potential classes for this fall before July 1st, please email us and we'll be happy to let you know which classes we currently have teachers for.

SHHC Classes for Fall 2014

SHHC is pleased to announce our class offerings for the Fall 2014 semester.

SHHC Family Membership is open until July 31, 2014 or until all membership slots are filled.   All families are required to be members of SHHC in order to attend our Co-Op classes. Class Registration for specific classes will be held on August 4th, 2014 and details for that will be released only to current SHHC members via email.   Family Membership fees ($60)  cover enrollment for all children in your family into one class per class period (two) for the entire 12 week semester. In order to register your family for membership, you must submit the three registration documents and your fees payment (either by check or PayPal.).  Please email us at the address on the blog sidebar if you need a mailing address to send your documents.

Please note that while we are making every effort ensure that these are the classes  that will be offered this Fall, there remains the possibility of changes needing to be made due to unforeseen circumstances.  Also, please be aware that some of these classes may require an additional small supply fee which will be indicated prior to Class Registration on August 4th, 2014.

K-2nd

“How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World”

This class will be based on the book by Marjorie Priceman.  Since the market is closed we will have to travel the world to find the ingredients for our pie.  We will study geography, learn how different foods are grown and harvested, make crafts, throw in some math (graphing, measuring, etc..)  and of course make an apple pie.  The students will complete a notebook with all that they have done.  Supply fee will be $3 per child.

Animal Crafts

After reading a story or sharing facts about a specific animal, the students will use a variety of art media to create a different animal craft each week. 

Read and Find Out Science

Hands-on science class covering a variety of topics.  Based on the book series “Read and Find Out Science”. 

Fruits of the Spirit

Learn about Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness and Self-Control in a fun, hands-on and interactive way!

 

3^rd-5^th

Mystery Boxes: Scientific Method

Kids will break into teams and use the scientific method to conclude what was put into a sealed box.  They will use lab sheets to write down their reasoning and have a class discussion before the big reveal.

Gardening 101

 Do you like to play in the dirt? Would you like to learn the basics to growing your own food. Join us to learn about cool and warm season fruits and vegetables, the life cycle of plants, photosynthesis, composting, the food web, role of pollinators, bugs and much more.  Supply fee will be $5 per child.

Animal Kingdom Notebooking

We will be notebooking through the Animal Kingdom with AIG’s “The World of Animals”. Each week we will look at one group of animals both vertebrates and invertebrates. We will identify characteristics, classifying as well as identifying which day they were created.  Supply fee will be $2 per child.  Donations of animal magazines/stickers/pictures may be requested.

American Girl

American History taught with American Girl Dolls through crafts, activities, and books covering the 19^th and 20^th centuries.

 

6^th and Up

Pop Art Appreciation

Pop Art was the art of popular culture. It was brash, young and fun and included different styles of painting and sculpture from various countries.  Possible artists we might learn about are Andy Warhol, Roy Lichenstein, Jasper Johns and others.  We will also replicate some of their famous pieces.  ** Class fee will be $10 for art supplies.

Tolkien Study: The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings

Come with us, as we journey into the world of J.R.R. Tolkien.  We will explore 4 of his books, The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and Return of the King.  Students will be required to read the Hobbit.  They also need to be familiar with the other 3 novels, whether through reading them or watching the movies.  Parents, we will possibly be watching excerpts from all of the movies. 

Claymation

Students will learn about a stop motion technique called claymation.  We will discuss the history of Claymation, and a famous movie, Chicken Run.  Students will work in teams to create a storyboard, build clay characters/props, design a set, and take pictures all leading up to the making of their own animated short film using computer software.  Claymation not only allows students to be creative story writers, but hands on sculptors and builders.  Supply fee will be $5 per child.

Survival Skills

We will be practicing some of the skills necessary for surviving in both backcountry and urban settings. Planned topics include: Levels of awareness, fire starting methods, rocket stove assembly, knot tying, survival shelter construction, Morse code, water filtration, and more. Students will need to supply a few items for this class.

 

High School (8^th and up)

Public Speaking

"Surveys about our fears commonly show fear of public speaking at the top of the list.  Our fear of standing up in front of a group and talking is so great that we fear it more than death, in surveys at least." - Dr. Croston, Ph.D., Psychology Today.

 Whether you have a fear of giving a speech in public or just a fear of ordering out loud in the fast food line, you still have to communicate with other people. How do I learn to relax and get my thoughts out?  This year we are offering a Public Speaking Class using the textbook "Secrets of Great Communicators", by Jeff Myers.  We will be studying great speakers such as Ronald Reagan and Winston Churchill and applying what we learn in class.  By working together we will take the fear out of communicating and learn the skills to go impact our world. 

 This class is being offered so the parent can count it as a high-school speech elective for 8th - 12th grade students and will include "homework".  Students will need to complete reading, note taking and speech assignments during the week.  ** Class fee will be required to cover the cost of the textbook for each student.  Supply fee will be $14 per child to cover the student workbook.

 
Basic Life Skills

Class will cover a variety of topics including Banking 101, Budgeting, How to write a resume/prepare for a job interview, Basic household repairs, Gardening/Food preservation, Emergency preparedness, Sewing basics, Meal planning/Grocery shopping and more.  Class will require several hours of homework/research/projects each week. *This class is open to middle school students  there is space available-- they will not have to complete the same assignments given for high school credit.  Class will have enough work assigned so that it could be counted for 1/2 credit elective of Home Economics.  Supply fee of $15 per child.

  

Also, Apologia Biology (a high school level Biology class) is being offered at Hopewell Baptist from 12:00-2:30 (through 1^st period) by Carol Hecox .  Class and Supply fees for this class are completely separate from Co-Op,  would be paid directly to Carol and do not require Co-Op membership.  Please contact us if you would like more information about this.
