Fall 2016 Classes

SHHC is pleased to announce our class offerings for the Fall 2016 semester.

SHHC Family Membership is open until July 31st, 2016 or until all membership slots are filled.   All families are required to be members of SHHC in order to attend our Co-Op classes. Class Registration for specific classes will be held on August 1st, 2016 and details for that will be released only to current SHHC members via email.   Family Membership fees ($65)  cover enrollment for all children in your family into one class per class period (two) for the entire 12 week semester. In order to register your family for membership, you must submit the three registration documents and your fees payment (either by check or PayPal.).  Please email us at the address on the blog sidebar if you need a mailing address to send your documents.

 Please note that while we are making every effort ensure that these are the classes  that will be offered this Fall, there remains the possibility of changes needing to be made due to unforeseen circumstances.  Also, please be aware that some of these classes may require an additional supply fee which will be indicated prior to Class Registration on August 1st, 2016.

 Fall 2016 Classes

1st Period

K-2nd

Community Helpers/People in Your Neighborhood: A chef, a firefighter, a construction worker, and more!  Let's dive into learning about some of the key workers in our community through books, crafts, special visitors, and the occasional fun snacks.  Supply fee:  $5 per student, and please list any food allergies or dietary restrictions. 

Little Builders:  Let's build it! We will build towers, tunnels, bridges, buildings and even snacks. We'll also read books, play games and have fun!

3^rd-5^th  

Learn to Play the Recorder!:   Students will be given the opportunity to begin to read music, play real music on the recorder, and understand basic music theory.  Students will be taught proper posture, how to read and play music, and instrument care.  The recorder class is a great way to introduce your child to basic music principles and basic music appreciation.  Every student will have their own recorder and will need to bring it to class EVERY week. Supply Fee $5 per student to cover cost of the instrument.

Meteorology: The science that deals with the phenomena of the atmosphere, especially weather and weather conditions.  The first half of this course we will study the fascinating world of weather including temperature, precipitation, wind speed, humidity and cloud cover.  The second half of the class we will study extreme weather conditions such as hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.  So grab an umbrella and step into the wild world of weather where each week we’ll have a cool range of experiments, games, projects, interesting facts, and more!  Supply Fee: $5 per student.

6^th and up 

Team Building with Teens:   Do you thrive with hands-on activities and love to figure out a great challenge? Then join our team where you will work through various projects to enhance your leadership and decision-making skills. Come build friendships while having lots of fun!

Backyard Herbalist: Discover edible and medicinal herbs in your own backyard or local grocery store. We will spend time observing, identifying, and drawing these herbs. We will discuss their medicinal uses, cautions, and best preparations. We will also be tasting some of them and learning how to safely use them for common ailments. We will assemble personally-illustrated herbal notebooks which can be expanded and used for reference throughout adulthood. Planned topics include: dandelions, roses, clover, ginger, garlic, and more. (Requests for other herbs will be considered.) Students will need to bring colored pencils each week.

Greek Mythology:  We will examine the themes of the myths, and will determine their relevance in today’s culture and take a look at how Greek mythology has impacted our culture. Students will create Greek Mythology Notebook to tack who’s who in the wonderful world of Greek Mythology.  Supply Fee $5-8 per student.

 

9^th and up

Dave Ramsey’s Personal Finance for Homeschoolers: The class will include professional videos, looking to God's word, discussions, real life mock budgeting, interviews and much more! Short video lessons will be watched each week as Dave Ramsey and his team creatively weave together humor and real-life stories that educate and reinforce sound principles of managing money. (While watching the video, students can follow along using the student text if you choose to purchase it) This will be a fun way to learn some of the most important skills a person needs for high school, college, the work force and their entire life. This class will be a 2 SEMESTER class as we will pick up in January where we leave off in November.

STEPS to a Healthy Teen: This class will utilize the National 4-H Curriculum, STEPS  (Segments To Emphasize Physical activity and nutrition Steps), which consists of 12 activities for teens. The purpose of the curriculum is to help youth develop skills and knowledge in physical education and nutrition. Participants experience a variety of learning methods and tools such as games, case scenarios, computer software programs, cooking demonstrations, and fitness challenges. The first 10 activities include a Teen Research (TR) Challenge take-home task.  Supply Fee will be $10 per student for a workbook.

2nd Period

K-2nd

Flat Stanley Literature Study: Come along with Stanley as he flies through the air, travels through the mail, and even catches burglars in an art museum! In this class we will be reading through the Flat Stanley book as well as other related books and completing many hands-on activities across the curriculum. There will be lots to learn from our famous flat friend!

Crazy Kid Concoctions:  Join us as we explore goop, gunk, and so much more. Each week we will get hands on creating fabulous concoctions or silly science experiments. We plan to grow crystals, make a papier-mâché piñata, create our own Rube Goldberg machine, and write messages with invisible ink.  Supply Fee: TBD.

3^rd-5^th  

Pirate-ology: Put your mark down here to sign up for our crew of landlubbers turned swashbuckling pirates.  Each week we will learn exciting facts about world renowned pirates and what became of their illustrious treasures, geography overview and map creations, learn the history of the East India Trading Company, Put on our own Readers Theater Pirate Show, read a tale from Long John Silver, Create our own Pirate Flag and personalized diary, lastly we might see the Dread Pirate Roberts lurking around our Pirate Buffet on the last week. It will be fun time, me matey. 

3^rd-6^th

Lego Mindstorms:     This class is an introduction to programming robots using the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Robotics System. Working in small groups, students will use a computer to program their robot to move, react, and make sounds in order to solve challenges.  As time allows, topics will include motor control, sensors, timing, program loops, logic gates, decision-making, timing sequences, and binary number systems as well as problem solving strategies. Supply Fee: $15 per student will be required and several laptops will be needed if you have one you can bring.

6^th and up 

Introduction to Car Care/Auto Maintenance:  Do you know how a car works? If you’re planning on driving one day, there are lots of things about an automobile that you should know!  This will be a hands-on class for guys and girls. You will go over a car bumper to bumper, learn parts of the car, learn how to check tire pressure and change a tire, learn how to change oil, etc..

Mysterious Diseases: A serious illness is sweeping through town.  Why are people getting sick? What is the source of this disease?  Students will work in groups to track down the source of the mysterious illness. Students will need to provide a 3-ring binder.

The Hiding Place Literature Study:   We will be reading through The Hiding Place.  As we do, we will discuss the historical background of the war, literary devices, vocabulary, response in the face of evil, and forgiveness.  We will participate in activities, and watch the movie at the end of the semester. Some reading will be required at home and students will need to have access to a copy of the book (e-book or hard copy).

8th and up

Intro to Photography:   We will watch instructional videos on lighting, framing a shot, rule of thirds and more.  We will also take pictures and share with the class.  Any camera will work in this class as long as your child knows how to use the camera.  We will not go into extensive settings.  Tripods may be helpful but not required. Phone cameras are fine. 

9^th and up

SAT/ACT Prep:  This class will focus on review of concepts and test taking strategies for the English and Math portions of the SAT and ACT.
